What machines are you using?  Lets share the pros and cons of each!!!

I suggest that we keep the discussions only about the machines and facts without any brand bashing!!!

I use and have: Garrett Infinium, White's BHID 300, Fisher CZ-20, Fisher CZ-6-A, Bounty Hunter Discovery 3300!!!!!

Hi all,

This is from another post I have on this forum. I'll start with the Infinium which is an amazing machine!

From the original post:

The Infinium is a great machine!!! It definitely goes the deepest and will hit hard on the real tiny gold too!!!

It's not my most used machine but comes out for specific conditions. This is because no single water machine is perfect for everything, as many water hunters will tell you.

The discrimination is different over lets say a standard type VLF. The Infinium is a pulse machine and it works completely different from VLF technology.

The Infinium has two different tones for ferrous and non-ferrous types of metal. It also has a reverse discrimination setting that when used in conjunction with the high-low tones, and the regular discrimination settings, will have you digging a whole lot less junk than lets say a standard PI machine.

The other thing is learning the Infiniums langauge and what all the different sounds are telling you about the target. I would say for any machine it takes at least 50 hrs of use before you really start to understand what's being told to you!!!

There’s a hefty learning curve with this machine and it’s not perfect for all types of hunting! BUT, for a seasoned water-hunting vet or someone willing to take the time to learn it, it’s KILLER and will find stuff others are missing!!!

It will also handle tough black sand MUCH better than my VLF machines can while going down to some amazing depths! However, this machine used on a trashy beach could drive you bonkers too! You see, out in the water there’s MUCH less trash and you want to dig all the signals to make sure you don’t miss anything good!!!

It works best in the water, surf, some wet sand, hunted out locations, sanded in areas, and to boot is a super nugget-hunting machine too!!!

If you only had one machine to use for beach area hunting, I would go with a top brand VLF. If you want to get the most out of serious water hunting, then the only way to go is with both types of machines (VLF and PI)!!!

OK, you can see that I really like my Infinium!!!

I hope this answers some questions as my fingers are starting to hurt from all this typing!!!

Thanks

Please do share that info!!! I'm very interested in how that machine works.

What coils are you using with it so far?

Happy Hunting!!!

Well, I have thought about it and I've seen a lot of arguing about metal detectors on some other sites, I don't want that for me. I just have a little 200.00 Fisher F2 and nobody will care and just say I don't know whats good because I'm new.

I know exactly what you're saying! However, As in my original post: "just facts without brand bashing", I meant just that. I'm very interested in just the facts, like the best settings that are working for you, your favorite coil size for different situations....etc

I was wondering if you've tried the 4" coil yet? If you detect in trashy areas these small coils can really help you pick through the junk to cherry pick the coins around them.

You seem to be doing very well with your new machine and I wish you MUCH success with it in the future too!

I also own a Discovery 3300 (Bounty Hunter) and it's a very powerful low cost detector! It actually runs great and is very hot on nickels (is hotter on nickels than some of my higher end machines)!

I really don't judge one machine over the other as they "all" have strengths for different purposes and detecting situations.

The machine you have has produced many great finds for plenty of hunters out there! The dollar price of a detector vs performance has been blurred in recent years with better electronics and many lower cost machines working near or as well as higher priced units.

The "real deal" is the detector user! icon_thumleft  If a hunter really spends enough time learning their machine, the detector WILL produce many great finds for them!

Remember, If you know all the little sounds to listen for, know how to tweak the machine for the best conditions, spend enough time learning the detector, you will do well with any decent brand detector!

Please keep posting your finds!!! Thanks Wink

Inthasurf how do you like the whites beach hunter? Water hunting now seems interesting to me. How hard is it to dig in the water?  Thanks ghunta

I really like the BHID 300 (It's my first out all around beach hunting demon)! The BHID goes very deep for a VLF detector and the recovery is fast around trash.

One of the best features is that you have visual ID with the multi colored lights in "all metal" mode which allows very deep detecting on the smaller stuff! As far as I know this is the only beach hunting machine that has this hunting ability.

My experience with White's service has also been great! The turn around time on repairs is fast with excellent follow up from the company!

The beaches in my area have lots of black sand and it runs well despite these conditions.

I use this detector along with my PI machine and I really feel all situations are covered between the two.

As far as digging, make sure to get yourself a decent scoop (well worth the money)! There are many different scoops for the beaches. The screen type at the end of the scoop is great for beach hunting in the sand as it allows the sand to sift very fast thorough the scoop.

However these won't last long if you're in the water digging with lots of shells and rocks!
I don't use the screen type but I do have 3 heavy scoops for in the water use. One of my scoops is aluminum and lighter than the other 2 steel ones.

The only issue with aluminum is the salt water can turn it black and this can get on your hands. I wrapped mine with duct tape from the handle down to the bottom end to prevent this from happening and it works.

Digging in the water is tough and takes practice but in time will come to you!

Hope this helps and answers some of your questions! icon_thumleft

well its been while since Ive had time to post.
Ive been working 62 hours a week for the last couple of months but I really wanted to take time to post in this thread.
this is mostly for the guy with the f2 but would like replies from anyone.
I started out with an american hawks H-P 6010 brand new for $40. (I called it my "chinese Cheapie-Beepie)
I never found any gold with it (because I didnt have a clue what I was doing) but I did find quite a bit of silver jewelery and in about a month I had dug enough clad with it to buy a used garrett treasure ace 300.
the 12 segment I.D. is amazing and the disc is super but the treasure eye is useless(in my opinion) you have to pinpoint in motion but with the 8"coil its a snap.
I found several gold rings, silver coins and jewelery, and a mountian of clad with it . it got great depth about 7 inches on  a clad quarter but really stunk on nickels. just a crappy weak signal that would not always repeat and was tough to pin point.
I outgrew that one in about a year and UPGRADED (please no brand bashing, flaming or just general ignorance) to a B.H. Discovery 3000.
honestly the I.D. isnt as good as the Garrett. it only has about 6 segments but it gets outstanding depth and is really hot on nickels(as someone else said earlier)
it gets a little confused on the lower targets(from low foil to high pulltab) but I hunt extremely trashy areas.
I just bought a 4" coil and think that should solve the problem.
The only things I dont like about this machine is #1 its a bit flimsy(I really think the lower rod should have 2 lock buttons instead of 1) and #2 it only has manual ground balance in all metal mode.
other than that its a perfect fit for me and has a permanant place in my treasure hunting gear.
some of the places I really want to hunt have got really weird soil and most machines go a little bonkers so to solve that problem  I have went backwards and bought an analog machine with manual ground balance
a Garrett masterhunter 7 ads.
it needs a little repair(I might actually have time to work on it today ) it came with a 12",8.5",and a 7" hothead coil(if anyone has a 4" for that that they will sell give me a shout), I really think once I have it up and running I will have some really interesting finds.
I also just picked up an ace 150 on ebay once it gets here and I try it out Ill post about it.
I guess to sum it up it dont matter if a f2 costs less than an excal or dfx.
as the saying goes "it's not the weapon It's the warrior that weilds it!"
pick up all 3 coils for it , learn the sounds (and lack of sounds) that it makes and its a machine you will use for years and years.
well this was long and a bit pompous but I hope it helped someone and fired up a bit more disscussion

Thanks for sharing the info!!!
Yep, those BH 3000, 3300s R super hot on the nickels icon_thumleft

I was also looking for the hockey puck sized coil for my machine. I did hear that if you add the smaller coil it has to be tuned to each machine from Bounty Hunter, but this is just a one time tuning thing.

On the F4, which was built off of the 3000 series, you don't need to have the additional coil calibrated.

Those older Garrett's are very fine detectors and made really well. I had a Garrett Master Hunter (can't remember the exact model) way back and loved that machine. I made tons of fantastic finds with it too.

Keep us posted with some good treasure stories!

I agree, great posts. Nice to see actual discussion and not mean arguing like you see elsewhere Lips Sealed I guess now I will HAVE to write up what I think about the F2.

Ive heard folks talk about "tuning" coils and personally I think its a "fish story"
there is no adjustment on a coil(if there was I would have found it and been playing with it by now)
you could tune the machine to a specific coil but if you tune a machine to a 4" coil then your 8" and 10" would be out of whack.
I got my 4" in the mail today and did some bench tests and factory settings seem to be right on with it.
I dont have a depth indicator on this machine and if I did it probably would not work right with the small coil
but as far as the basics seems like all is well.
hopefully I will get to try it out saturday
